AC Not Cooling? Check These 7 Things Before You Call
When the house is hot, the temptation is to press buttons until something changes. Use a fixed sequence instead. These checks can catch simple control and airflow issues without opening equipment or guessing at refrigerant and electrical faults.
Leave and call for help first if you notice this
Stop using the system for smoke, a burning or strong electrical odor, sparking, a hot or damaged panel, repeated breaker trips, or a carbon-monoxide alarm near fuel-burning equipment. Use emergency services when there is immediate danger.
1. Read the thermostat, do not just lower it
Confirm:
- the system is set to Cool;
- the target is below the current room temperature;
- the fan is set as intended—usually Auto for normal cooling;
- the thermostat screen is powered and not showing an error or low-battery warning;
- a schedule, hold, away mode, or smart-home automation is not overriding the setting.
Wait the delay specified by the manufacturer after changing modes. Some systems intentionally protect the compressor with a short restart delay.
2. Check the filter and return-air path
Turn the system off before handling a filter if the instructions say to. Check that the filter is the correct size, faces the right direction, and is not visibly loaded with dust. ENERGY STAR recommends checking filters monthly during heavy use and replacing them when dirty.
Do not run the system without a filter unless the manufacturer specifically instructs it. Make sure return grilles and supply vents are not covered by rugs, furniture, boxes, or closed dampers.
3. Compare air at several vents
Note whether airflow is weak everywhere or only in one room. Check whether the air feels cool, room-temperature, or warm. This observation helps a technician separate a whole-system problem from a blocked register, damper, or duct issue.
Do not remove grilles or enter an attic or crawl space that is hot, wet, unstable, contaminated, or difficult to exit.
4. Look at the electrical controls—without opening panels
Visually check the labeled HVAC breakers and any obvious service switch described in the equipment manual. If a breaker has tripped, follow the manual and your electrical-safety comfort level.
Do not repeatedly reset it. A breaker that trips again is reporting a fault, not asking for another try. Leave equipment panels and capacitors to a qualified professional; components can retain dangerous energy after power is off.
5. Look for water at the drain or pan
Some systems use a float switch to stop cooling before a blocked condensate drain overflows. If you see water in an emergency pan, an active leak, or a wet ceiling, turn cooling off and protect the area below.
Do not bypass the float switch. Clear only an owner-serviceable drain using the exact equipment instructions; otherwise call an HVAC professional. ENERGY STAR includes the condensate drain in its maintenance checklist because blockage can cause water damage and affect indoor humidity.
6. Check the outdoor unit from a safe distance
With cooling requested, note whether the outdoor unit is operating. Clear loose leaves or vegetation around it only with power off and without opening the cabinet, bending fins, or spraying electrical components.
Never reach into a fan guard. If the indoor blower runs but the outdoor unit does not, report that symptom to the technician rather than trying to identify the failed component.
7. Look for ice
Ice on the refrigerant line, indoor coil area, or outdoor unit is a stop signal. Turn cooling off. Do not chip the ice or use heat to remove it.
A dirty filter or blocked airflow may contribute, but refrigerant and equipment faults can create similar symptoms. Correct an obvious filter or vent issue, let the system thaw according to professional/manufacturer guidance, and call if ice returns.

Give a short fact pattern:
- thermostat setting and indoor temperature;
- whether indoor and outdoor units run;
- filter condition and replacement date;
- airflow at several vents;
- water, ice, odor, noise, or error code;
- breaker or float-switch behavior;
- model number and previous service date.
Ask for diagnostic findings in writing before approving a major repair or replacement. If replacement is proposed, ENERGY STAR advises checking air sealing and duct condition as part of the whole-house decision—not treating equipment size as the only variable.
