Dryer Taking Too Long? Check the Fire-Safety Path First
A slow dryer is not just an inconvenience. The U.S. Fire Administration identifies failure to clean as a leading factor in home dryer fires. Treat a sudden increase in drying time as a fire-safety and airflow observation first, then an appliance diagnosis.
Stop immediately for these signs
Stop the dryer for:
- smoke, flame, sparking, or a burning odor;
- a hot, discolored, loose, or damaged plug or outlet;
- scorching on clothes or around the door;
- scraping, grinding, or violent movement;
- a drum that continues heating or turning after it should stop;
- a gas odor or carbon-monoxide alarm near a gas dryer.
Leave for smoke, fire, gas, or a carbon-monoxide alarm and call emergency services from outside. Do not pull a plug from a hot or damaged outlet.
Start with the load and settings
Run no additional test cycle until you inspect the basics. Record what changed:
- load size and fabric type;
- washer spin performance;
- selected heat and sensor setting;
- whether clothes are damp, very hot, or both;
- approximate normal and current cycle time;
- recent appliance movement or vent work.
An oversized load cannot tumble and expose wet fabric evenly. A washer that leaves items unusually wet can also make the dryer look slow. Correct those facts before blaming the vent or heating system.
Clean the lint filter correctly
USFA advises cleaning the lint filter before and after each cycle and never operating a dryer without it. Remove lint using the appliance instructions. Inspect the screen for tears, warping, waxy residue, or poor seating.
Do not reach beyond the owner-accessible filter cavity with improvised tools while the appliance is energized. Do not use a damaged filter.
Observe the accessible vent path
Without moving a heavy dryer or disconnecting gas, look for an accessible duct that is crushed, kinked, detached, torn, or trapped against the wall. USFA recommends checking the venting behind the dryer for damage or restriction and having the dryer installed and serviced by a professional.
If access requires pulling the dryer, entering an attic or crawl space, climbing, opening the appliance, or disturbing a gas connection, stop and use qualified service.
Never redirect dryer exhaust into an attic, crawl space, garage, or room. Do not improvise with an unapproved duct material.
Check the outdoor termination from the ground
During a normal cycle, the outdoor cover should open and exhaust should be present. Observe it safely from the ground. Look for a stuck flap, lint mat, nest, snow, vegetation, or damage.
Do not insert a hand or tool into an operating vent. Do not climb in wet, icy, or unstable conditions. A weak outdoor flow is evidence for inspection; it is not proof that one particular section is blocked.
Use a controlled comparison
After obvious safe corrections, one ordinary load can provide a useful comparison if there were no stop signs:
- same load type and size as a previously normal cycle;
- clean, correctly seated lint filter;
- normal setting;
- start and finish time recorded;
- outdoor cover observed;
- clothes checked for unusual heat or odor.
If drying remains slow, heat is abnormal, or the vent cover does not behave normally, stop repeating cycles. Ask for the complete exhaust path and appliance to be inspected.
What to ask the service company
Request written findings for:
- lint accumulation and measured exhaust condition;
- duct damage, material, length, joints, and termination;
- appliance airflow and temperature controls;
- heater, burner, sensor, motor, and drum observations;
- any installation defect;
- what was cleaned or replaced and how to prevent recurrence.
